Shipping deadlines for Christmas gifts

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Micky Rogers, owner of PostNet at the Rivery (in the strip mall in front of Wal-Mart) here in Georgetown, sent out a handy calendar of ship-by dates in order for gifts to arrive by Christmas, and she kindly agreed to let me share it with HometownGeorgetown.com readers. Click the picture below to see a full size PDF document.

Micky also sent a press release on how to stay green when shipping your holiday gifts. For example, PostNet will recycle your packing peanuts. What an easy way to do something good for the environment!

Bragging on a friend who rents wedding dresses

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

I don’t usually write about stores and events south of the Georgetown/Round Rock border, but I had to make an exception in this case because I’m so proud of my friend, Sue Gordon, owner of Classy Concepts Design. Sue is my customer service idol. Seriously. She used to work for the custom builder who built our home. We lived overseas while it was being built, and Sue uploaded thousands of pictures so we could watch the progress online. I’m not exaggerating. We really do have more than a thousand pictures of our house under construction. Sue struck out on her own years ago, establishing Classy Concepts in Round Rock. Her business was featured this week in the Round Rock Leader.

Classy Concepts rents formal wear, including wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and even flower girl dresses. (You can rent prom dresses, too, and they have tuxedos for the menfolk.) For a fraction of the cost, you can wear a designer wedding gown. They’ll even do alterations!

The other arm of their business is window coverings. We purchased all of our custom blinds from Classy Concepts. Sue has an amazing portfolio of curtains and other window treatments that she has designed and sewn, including some in the house that won the People’s Choice Award in a recent Parade of Homes.

This week in residential real estate in Georgetown, TX

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Almost half of the sales that show up in this week’s hotsheet took place in Sun City Texas. The average price per square foot of all the homes was $119.70, ranging from about $60 per square foot all the way up to over $200. On average, the homes sold for 92% of the original list price. I was very interested to note that only 5 of the 14 homes that showed as Sold on this week’s hotsheet had experienced a price reduction while listed on the market. These homes ended up selling for 94% of the list price. The homes that did experience a price reduction ended up selling for 98% of the final list price. Georgetown Texas home sales activity for week ending November 23
45 homeowners reduced their prices over the past week in GTE and GTW. These homes have been active on the market for an average of 89 days.

Local central vacuum company could benefit from Little People, Big World

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Just Right Homes, a local company that installs the coolest central vacuum system I’ve ever heard of, could see a bump in orders after the November 24 episode of Little People, Big World on TLC. Ron Marullo, President of Just Right Homes, told me that one of the central vac products he distributes is going to be installed in the house on the reality show. What’s so cool about this system is that it features retractable hoses at each vacuum port throughout the house, so there’s no need to lug a hose from room to room. The system can be retrofitted into existing homes, or installed during the construction process.

Just Right Homes is based out of Cedar Park, TX and serves the greater Austin area. They also install home theatres and surround sound.

Best fried okra ever at Catfish Parlour in Georgetown, TX

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

I ate lunch today at Catfish Parlour on Williams Drive here in Georgetown, TX, and I have to tell you, they have the best fried okra I have ever tasted. (And I’ve tasted some good fried okra in my lifetime.) It was crispy and hot. The Express Lunch is a pretty terrific deal. For $6.95 plus tax, I got a small catfish plate. This came with four small fried catfish fillets and unlimited vegetables, fries, and hush puppies. You certainly could never go hungry. Frankly, I forced myself to leave as soon as I finished my first helping. I didn’t trust myself in the same room with that okra.

For the same price, I could also have gotten shrimp, or a combination of shrimp and catfish. The service was excellent, too. Owner Chris Kerbow chatted with customers as we came out of the line, and our waitress was friendly and right there whenever we needed her.

Look what I got from Souper! Salad!

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I ate at Souper! Salad! on Friday, and I’ve been meaning to write about it since. I knew what to expect from Souper Salad (I’ve grown tired of the exclamation points) because I’d visited the chain before in other locations. The Georgetown location impressed me from the moment I walked in.
When you first go in, you pay at the register. The restaurant was hopping, but not overly so. My friend and I had no difficulty finding a table. A waitress came to our table to take our drink orders. (Aside: After I got home, I realized I had neglected to leave a tip. This is the downside of paying before you eat. It’s easy to forget. I’ll have to leave an extra tip next time to get my tipping karma back in balance.) Then we hit the salad bar. It was everything I dreamed it could be! Lots of choice, and everything looked very fresh.
There was such a variety that I feel like I could eat there every day for a month without feeling burned out. Even if you’re not in the mood for salad, you can get pizza, loaded baked potatoes, pasta, soup, fresh bread, and even tacos, from what I hear. (I didn’t make it back to the back corner, but my friend did reconnaisance for me and assures me there were tacos.) This morning, I joined the Souper Fresh Club. It’s free to join, and I already got this handy-dandy coupon out of it. From what I understand, Souper Salad will occasionally email coupons to me throughout the year, including something special for my birthday. I should’ve told them my birthday was in December. I’m all a-flutter! Souper Salad in Georgetown Texas offers online membership
By the way, I asked as I was leaving how much a take-away order costs. For $6.59 plus tax, you get two cup-sized soup containers, one decent covered salad plate, and two little paper envelopes to take fresh bread. I think that’s a fantastic deal.

Custom builder will build at cost

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Late last week, I went to look at homes with a friend of mine, and I drove by to check the progress of an incredible home in Escalera Ranch, a prestigious subdivision west of town. You may remember, I had a couple of lots listed there a short time ago. The custom home was built on a fairly steep hill by Brad Marshall Homes. It’s finished, and it is super. Brad Marshall Homes build awesome homes, and I mean “awesome” in the sense that they truly inspire awe. Around every corner, you find another surprise. Gorgeous work. You can see some pictures of their homes - exterior and interior - at their website.

They’re having a special promotion right now that I think really proves how confident they are in the quality of their work. If you want to build in a neighborhood where they haven’t yet established a presence, they’ll build a home for you at cost. The neighborhoods are subject to approval, of course, which only makes sense. But think about that. The reason they’re offering this deal is that they know that once others in the neighborhood see their homes, they’ll get more business. So if you’ve been thinking about building a custom home, now’s the time to get started. If nothing else, contact the folks at Brad Marshall Homes for more information. Knowledge is power, and there’s no risk in asking questions. Even if you don’t own a lot yet, they can help you find a lot in a prestigious neighborhood where they’d like to build and where you’d love to live.

Lighting of the Square just two weeks away

Friday, November 14th, 2008

The City of Georgetown’s Convention & Visitors Bureau has put out a nice newsletter with details on all the holiday happenings here in Georgetown. First up is the Lighting of the Square on November 28, the day after Thanksgiving. (Which means, for those of you doing your math, that Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away!) For a handy one-page calendar, click here. Doesn’t the little boy holding a Williamson County Courthouse snow globe make you smile? That graphic was designed by Georgetown’s own Nick Ramos of Graphismo.

Restaurant updates

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Lots of exciting things happening in the restaurant realm here in Georgetown. Today, I had lunch at the new Monument Cafe, on the corner of Austin Avenue and 5th Street. The new location opened on Monday. I think everyone in town is trying to get in this week. Our wait was quite long. However, it was a much nicer wait than at the previous location; they have a good sized waiting area inside, plus comfortable benches outside. Did you know that you can look up the daily specials on their website? When I’m too lazy to cook, I like to check their specials and call in an order for pick-up. I can always count on the food to be delicious. There’s a reason the restaurant is always crowded. The food is out of this world.
By the way, the Monument will serve Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings. If I remember right, their menu insert said Thanksgiving dinner would be served from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. They also have a great selection of homemade pies that you can take home for dessert.
While I was waiting, one of my friends mentioned that she’d eaten recently at Silver & Stone, which just opened for business atop the gorgeous Tamiro Plaza. She said she called to ask whether she needed to dress up, and she was told that the dress code was business casual. Jeans might be okay, the woman on the phone said, if they were paired with a nice shirt. My friend said most of the men in there were wearing suits.
Larry Black, husband and partner-in-real estate of Lena Lansdale, one of my colleagues at Moreland, told me the food was very good, and they had valet parking available. Larry suggests you try the cucumber martini.
Silver & Stone is a pricier option than most of Georgetown’s restaurants. Expect to pay at least $50 per person, more if you have some drinks.
Tomorrow, I’m going to have lunch with a different friend at our brand new Souper! Salad!, which celebrated its grand opening on Monday. I love a good salad. I talked today to a few women who beat me to Souper! Salad!, and they each said it was wonderful. Souper! Salad! is at Wolf Ranch, facing Highway 29. (For some reason, I really enjoy! writing! all! those! exclamation! points.) Souper Salad, Silver and Stone, and new Monument Cafe open in Georgetown
If any of you have eaten at any of these restaurants, please post a comment to share your opinion with other readers. Your comments are so valuable!
