BB’s Home Cooking reopens on Williams Drive (new location)
January 20, 2009 at 8:26 pm , by Jenel Looney
I can’t count the number of people who have asked me with a sense of longing in their voice, “Did you ever eat at BB’s Home Cooking?” Alas, the small restaurant had closed by the time I moved to Georgetown. From everything I’ve heard, BB’s provided some of the best Southern comfort food in town.
Rejoice, foodies! BB’s Home Cooking reopened this morning at eleven! Although I still haven’t eaten there, I did stop by the restaurant this afternoon to see what it looks like. BB’s is at 4701 Williams Drive, in the same shopping center as Hollandaze Gourmet, a fantastic upscale kitchen shop, and Hippie Cowgirl, one of Georgetown’s fabulously unique boutiques.
If you’re coming from downtown, drive out Williams Drive past the H-E-B, and the shopping center will be on your right soon after about half a mile. The shopping center is a series of stucco buildings with arched doors and windows and rustic appeal. Inside BB’s, you’ll find vaulted ceiling and more of that rustic charm. Plenty of seating at tables, in booths, and along the bar.
I sneaked a peek at BB’s dinner menu. Catfish, chicken, salads… Even a veggie plate which allows diners to choose four vegetable sides. All the desserts are homemade. I won’t be able to enjoy those until after my New Year’s resolution proves effective, but I’d love to live vicariously through you all. Anyone who has eaten at BB’s, whether in the new incarnation or at the former place of business, please post a comment. If I remember right… and those of you in the know can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong… the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day and for breakfast on the weekends.

I’m so excited! I love BB’s! I’ve had fantastic chicken fried steak and greens, as well as some great burgers at the old location. Now the only thing that would make me happier would be for Stone Canyon Cafe to reopen.

I know. I’m very curious as to why Stone Canyon closed. It seemed like they were busy every time I went in there. Inquiring minds….

I know someone who worked at Stone Canyon who said their food costs/employee expenses were through the roof and said they would not last much longer. I think that was 7 months ago. Have driven by BB’s a few times and it is always packed! Good luck to them!!

Well, my wife and I tried BB’s tonight and although they have a sign on the door of “in training”, there is no excuse for the food. My wife had the trout and it was overcooked, the baked sweet potatoe was so small you were lucky to get a couple of forks full, the ONLY vegtable on the menu is green beens, and they were boiled to death. I had the meat loaf and mashed potatoes and rate them fair at best. And they couldn’t even get the roll right. It was hard at the edges from overheating. Couple this with the temperature of the food was luke warm. Not much going for it. No drinks and this cost with tip ovewr $32. Not a good value in this economy.
We’ll not go again

Steve, I’m sorry to hear you and your wife didn’t enjoy your meal. I hope things get better. I’ve heard such wonderful things about BB’s that I have high hopes. Maybe they’ll get the wrinkles ironed out with a little time.

Steve I’m sorry your experience was MUCH different from ours! After reading your post this evening (which we found while we were trying to find their telephone number) we paused for a second and thought maybe we should give BB’s a few more days to work out the kinks. However as some very anxious customers we couldn’t wait any longer and decided to give BB’s a try for dinner. Two of our four fabulous dinners included baked sweet potatoes and unlike your description they were half of some VERY large potatoes so unless someone was using a pitch fork there PLENTY of potato to eat along with the second side item. Rolls…couldn’t get enough of them, they were delicious!
We welcome BB’s back to Georgetown with open arms and hope that everyone will give them a try! If by chance you are one of the unlucky ones that experiences something less than acceptable (nobody is perfect, right?!) you will bring it to John’s (the owner) attention and give him the chance to make it right. But if you’re one of those that isn’t willing to give John a second chance then that’s ok too as that’s one less person ahead of me in line!

Thank you so much for posting of your experience, Donna! I’m meeting friends at BB’s for lunch on Monday, and I’m very excited to hear about the sweet potatoes. I’m on a low carb diet, so I can’t have mashed potatoes (or the rolls), but I’m allowed sweet potatoes. Can’t wait to try them out!

I think the Pepsi machine showing in the window on the street side does not give a good impression of the restaurant…you may want to consider moving it. We ate there Friday night and the food and service was great.

Peggy, glad you liked it. I went there for lunch with friends today…. only to discover they’re closed on Mondays. I’ll have to try again another day. I’m so curious!

Does BB’s have a website?
I drove by this evening but it was closed. I am curious what is on the menu. Also, you say it re-opened. I have lived in Georgetown for over 20 years but don’t remember this place. Where was the old BB’s?
thanks

Amanda,
I don’t think BB’s has a website yet. Their former location was also on Williams Drive, out toward Sun City, but on the other side of the street from where they are now. It was a very small location. From what I understand, the city forced them to close because the septic system at that location wasn’t large enough to handle the number of customers who poured in every day.
They’re closed on Mondays, so I’d recommend waiting until Tuesday and then dropping by again for a look at the menu.

I’m writing from Arizona and I’m desperate for some local help.
My niece lives in Texas and is pregnant and my sister wants to give her a baby shower. However we’re finding that planning a baby shower hundreds of miles away in another state has proven to be… well… challenging.
Is there anyone who could recommend a quaint place that won’t break the bank there in Georgetown?
My sister was hoping to do a tea party theme and found a tea house, but for what you get, it’s rather pricey and we need some other suggestions.
Thanks!

I am the grandmother to be from Arizona and thanks to my sisters post here yesterday re: a place to have my daughters baby shower, I have had numerous of suggestions from so many nice people. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate everyone taking the time to send in their suggestions. I love people in Texas you all are so NICE!!

Spring,
First, congratulations on your impending grandmotherdom! You must be so excited.
Second, let me put in a plug for Mel’s Lone Star Lanes for the shower. Mel’s won’t provide a tea party atmosphere, but I can promise you that everyone will have a fantastic time. At Mel’s, they can get rowdy without shame.
Whatever you decide, I hope the shower is memorable and fun, and that your daughter appreciates your efforts. I wish you the best!

Donna, I agree with you 100%. We have been to BB’s several times since they re-opened, the only problem we have encountered is the wait while smelling the incredible food! My husband and his co-workers try to make it for lunch at least once a week, and they are a notoriously picky group. I’ve had several of the entrees, the crab cakes are top notch, as is everything else I’ve had. And absolutely be sure to let John know if something isn’t right. If you are being reasonable, he will make it right. Let’s face it, there are some people that are not going to be happy no matter what you do. We are thrilled that they have re-opened and wish them the best of luck!

We sell our pasture-raised Angus beef here at the Georgetown Farmer’s Markets and are looking for some area restaurants that would be interested in featuring local meats, eggs and produce.
I’m promoting local production and am also putting together a list of such places (restaurants, caterers and retail) in the Georgetown/Round Rock area for distribution at the markets and various booths I have during the year. BB’s has been recommended to me, but I’d love to hear about others.

Went to BBs on 3/19/2009 for dinner.
Nice and friendly waitstaff, very nice place. Looking forward to the
outside seating in their beautiful courtyard.
Food was a bit disappointing.
The menu was too limited (not enough variety) and none of the
entrees were exceptionally done.
For a “home cooking” place they should be ashamed of themselves
for not having fresh mashed potatos. Their green beans were not
fresh either and they had very little else for side dishes.
Fresh spinach or collard greens are expected in a place like this and
none existed.
This place has exceptional potential: A big, new, beautiful, well laid-out
room to dine in with a huge bar and gorgeous outside courtyard.
I wish BBs great success. Please don’t blow this opportunity!
You have the potential to be one of the most successful restaurants
in Georgetown if you think bigger and set your standards higher.
Ask for comments from your diners and take those suggestions seriously… and
keep an open mind. As Robert Frost once said you have “…miles to go before you sleep…”
Good luck !

Oh, that’s a shame that you didn’t enjoy your meal! I went there a couple of days ago (finally) and loved it. I couldn’t try the mashed potatoes because I’m still on the stupid low-carb New Year’s Eve resolution diet. (I always preface “diet” with “stupid.”) My husband and I shared the pork chop plate. For side dishes, we had the green beans and the baked sweet potato. That sweet potato was absolutely incredible. A nice blackened top and then, when you cut into it, steaming hot, bright orange sweet potato. Yum! It was served with cinnamon sugar mixed with butter, which I ate even though I’m not supposed to have that on my diet, either.
I like your attitude, though, HannasDad. I think your review is well thought out and given with the spirit of constructive criticism. I hope the folks at BB’s see these comments and use them to get even better.
Thanks for posting!

I wish they had a homepage for our “netters” so we could check it out before we go. Nothing worse than getting to a restaurant and you either can’t afford it or first impressions are not good and having to turn around and walk out. It is 2009…get a homepage and show us whatcha got!!

BB’s on Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas
Excellent salads. Meat and vegetables like mama made. Decadent chocolate layer cake and apple pie. Very good coffee.
