Mardi Gras with a canine twist

On February 21, the Georgetown animal shelter is hosting a dog walk and canine costume contest at San Gabriel Park. You’ll see the poster below around town a lot over the next month. (Designed by the multi-talented Nick Ramos of Graphismo.)

The dog walk’s major sponsor is our local Schlotzky’s restaurant. I have to say, Michele J., the owner of this particular Schlotzky’s (whose last name will be too hard for me to spell until her upcoming marriage), has a philanthropic spirit. This past weekend, in fact, they donated 50 cents for every sandwich sold to the very talented Georgetown High School band. Support Schlotzky’s by eating there when you’re in the mood for a sandwich; they sure do a lot to support Georgetown. They also provide great catering services with fresh ingredients.
Online registration is available for the Mardi Gras dog walk. I’ve already signed up. Now I’m practicing with my dog to wear his colorful Mardi Gras costume so he’ll wear it all the way around the 3.1-mile walking path. He is going to have so much fun!

Jenel,
Thank you so much for helping spread the word about our 1st Annual Paws for Mardi Gras dog walk. Besides having the dog walk, we will have a costume contest, dog contests and silent auction. The proceeds from the walk will help the Georgetown Animal Shelter to equip a surgery room in the shelter. Hopefully we the weather will cooperate - and we hope lots of people will DRESS THEMSELVES, AND DRESS THEIR DOGS. We invite the public to come see the dog parade and shop at the silent auction even if they don’t want to participate in the walk.
Sincerely,
Jackie Carey

Jackie, I am very excited about this. I had no idea that the Mardi Gras dog walk is becoming an event across the nation. Anyone who’s at all intrigued, do a Google search on “Mardi Gras dog walk” and see pictures from similar events around America. Let’s make Georgetown’s dog walk a big success! Come have fun, and spread the word to your friends and families!

I’m commuting from Austin for this dog walk and I hope it will be worth it! Growing up in Georgetown I witnessed loads of support for school fund raisers and other community events such as Cupid’s Chase. I know this city takes great pride in it’s self and hope to see a lot of people and dogs enjoying themselves! See you there!
