Early voting for Georgetown City Council and GISD School Board

Today I’m wearing a lovely little “I voted” sticker on my shirt. But since I work from home as a virtual assistant and freelance writer, no one will see my little sticker and thereby be inspired to vote. So I’m writing about it here on HometownGeorgetown.com. Shouting proud and strong:

I voted!

There are two early voting locations in Georgetown, Texas, and you can vote at either one of them through May 5, no matter in which district you live. The first is the Williamson County Annex at 301 SE Inner Loop, and the second is the GISD Central Office Administration building on Lakeway Drive. You can also vote early at the Sun City Social Center on May 4 and May 5.

I live in District 1 in Georgetown. I abstained from voting in the school board election because I don’t have kids in GISD and don’t know enough about the candidates to make an educated choice. (No pun intended.) However, I did vote in the City Council election because this district’s seat is contested, and I researched the candidates. Community Impact’s election guide was a helpful starting point.

Most helpful to me in making my decision was when Ric Spencer introduced himself to me while I was working in the yard… but probably not helpful in the way that he had hoped. Mr. Spencer seems like a very nice man. My husband and I were inclined to like him because he said that he was running because he wanted to give something to the community, even though he was a shy person and felt out of his element. I’m a big proponent of community service, so this spoke to me. But then I asked Mr. Spencer what issues he felt were most important to Georgetown, and he said something along the lines of, “I want to be a true representative of the people, and work on the issues that they feel are important.” That told me nothing. Equally vague was his election literature. He spoke about his background, but he didn’t address any substantive issues. As much as I love Georgetown, we do face some serious issues as a community. Mr. Spencer’s response didn’t tell me whether or not he knew what the issues were, much less whether he had an opinion about how best to address them.

Then a few days later, I read an article in the Williamson County Sun in which Mr. Spencer said he wouldn’t talk to the press until after the May 7 election. His opponent, Patty Eason, was interviewed for the article. Every one of the questions was substantive. Why wouldn’t he answer these questions? I wondered. Why wouldn’t he do everything in his power to get his message out to the people whose support he wants? Not too long after that, an article in the Statesman said Ric Spencer had declined repeated requests for an interview.

I read Patty Eason’s responses to the questions in both articles, and I agreed with a lot of her views on the issues that face Georgetown. For all I know, Ric Spencer doesn’t have any views. I simply have no way of knowing how he feels because he has refused to talk about it publicly.

So in case you haven’t guessed it yet, I voted for Patty Eason. I hope you’ll make your own decision, and that you’ll vote, too. Local elections have incredible impact in our day-to-day lives. Voting early is wonderful. I was in the polling station for all of five minutes. It’s quick and easy.

Trying to find out about this election, admittedly ON election day, I was equally alarmed by the Statesman story, but for different reasons, as a 15 year transplant from Austin, here in Gtown for just 5 years and not up to speed on local issues…

My concerns with Statesman article don’t surround Rick’s refusal to speak to them; they are a partisan liberal paper, in on, say, lynching of Tom Delay by corrupt DA down there, and write front-page editorials, not news…So I can see why a person would avoid having his words twisted by them.

However, in excercising my liberal-to-English translator I’ve developed, (an internal one, but maybe it could be made into a computer program soon?) I also saw NOTHING about Ms. Eason’s intentions, but lots to concern me about her resume…

First, she wishes to be involved with commuter rail, which is highly contested, even WITH Obama destroying domestic car industry; and worse yet, she wishes “comprehensive” rail service. “Comprehensive” in terms of liberal-backed sex education, and immigration policy, and I assume many other issues, means, in a nutshell “proposing a course of action which has within itself the purpose of nullifying any positive impact of same action.” (e.g. telling children to wait until marriage, but handing them a condom; telling Mexican immagrants to consider themselves citizens with minimal paperwork, while leaving the border open, etc. etc.)

So, I wonder if, for instance, Georgetown, which I moved to for a larger house and possibly from some pressure from having lost THOUSANDS of dollars of equipment for my small business to theives in Austin over the years, and was pleasantly surprised to have lost NONE of here in Gtown, WHETHER Georgetown WANTS free roam for transients and malcontents from, say, San Antonio, and areas south of here before the immigration thing is figured out…

Additionally, other liberal buzz words in Statesman article gave no REAL history of candidate Eason, but raised flags with ME. For instance, she “served in many NON-PROFIT organizations. Which? What did she hope to accomplish? Non-Profit has a bad taste after seeing what ACORN has done in Thug Politics, rendering every election questionable, as responsible citizens wonder secretely if results were “in the margin of ACORN –I mean error…”

Speaking of ACORN, which will be in on the newly reassigned CENSUS, Ms. Eason is also involved in that census, which there is some concern will be skewed by democratic operatives under the new department assignment, and with help of, you guessed it, ACORN…

We are going to school admin. building to vote now, but these questions are enough to have me ready to vote for a dark horse, Ric, despite being able to find nothing about him, even on Dell World News website, but the aformentioned non-informative Statesman piece…But yes, I do wish Ric had found a forum; ’cause as a Dell person, he could have bought a web site and self-promoted if he had wished, I think. I WILL try to Google “ricspencer.com” just in case he did…Been trying Ric Spencer, Georgetown, etc.

Thanks, folks, for this forum.

My comment is under MODERATION? What does THAT mean? I guess that if it passes some guidelines which I hope only refer to obscenity, etc., that it will appear AFTER the election today. Great.

Maybe loosen up this site a bit. Like I said in my comment, I have had NOTHING stolen from me in Gtown in Five Years, so perhaps we are also trustworthy here to post a comment, sigt unseen???

Thanks for posting your comment. Never fear, the “under moderation” thing doesn’t just happen to you. All comments have to go through me for approval. It’s the only way I know to keep all the spam stuff that floods my inbox from making it to the website. I don’t want my readers to have to wade through automated spam. As long as a comment looks legitimate - ie, it is actually about Georgetown - then I’ll approve it. (I wouldn’t approve a comment with obscenity, either, but I might edit out the obscenity and then approve it. Fortunately, no one’s tested me on that one. Georgetown is a wonderful place, where people by and large respect each other.)

I’m so glad to hear that you haven’t experienced any theft since you moved to town. We feel very safe, as well. My husband and I had our house built in Old Town, and our builder had expected a lot of things to go missing from our construction site. We did not have a single item stolen. Not one. Georgetown is a wonderful place to live!
