Artist signing at the Georgetown public library

Monday, July 13th, 2009

On Wednesday, July 15th, residents and visitors can meet Georgetown artist Nick Ramos at the Georgetown Public Library, where he’ll sell limited edition, signed and numbered prints of his “At the Library” series, created to draw children into the library’s summer programs. 20% of the proceeds will be donated to the library.

The five vibrantly colored banners celebrate the joy of reading with whimsical scenes. In one, a boy is dressed as a pirate with a parrot on his shoulder. “Walk the plank at the library,” it says. In another, a girl examines mysterious footprints with a magnifying glass, under the caption “Get a clue at the library.” The banners will be on display outside the library throughout the summer.

“I was thrilled to create pieces that would attract attention to all the wonderful programs the library offers for free to the community,” Ramos said. “They give so much to everyone in Georgetown, especially to the children.”

The Georgetown Public Library offers summer programs for children of all ages. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in June and July, the library offers storytime, performances, and crafts for young ones. Teens will make their own video games, take an animation workshop, create a zine (a short magazine), and more. All age groups will enjoy summer reading programs with prizes.

The staff and volunteers designed the summer programs to show kids that adventures can be found inside the pages of a book. Nick Ramos captured this idea with the illustrations he created for the library. He hopes that Georgetown children will take pleasure in having his artwork decorating their bedrooms at home, as well.

Prints will be sold for $35 each. As a special promotion, the price will be lowered to $25 each on July 15th only. Ramos will be available from 10 am to 2 pm. After that date, prints can be purchased online at graphismo.etsy.com.

Painting and drawing lessons in Georgetown - beginners welcome!

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

We’re very fortunate here in Georgetown to have a thriving, active art community. We have many talented artists in town. One of my favorites - Jean Townsend - has decided to share her talents in a very generous way. She’s going to offer painting and drawing classes. I’ve already signed up for the Paint Your Pet class. I’m both excited and intimidated. Maybe I’ll do an impressionist sort of blurry picture of my dog. After all, he is always in motion.

Jean is a master of the pet portrait (and the baby portrait). If you’re not interested in painting your own pet, have Jean do it for you. You can see a gallery of her work on her website. (Click pet portrait.) Her prices are very reasonable for original paintings. Amazing, actually. Dog running
Jean is an accomplished artist and a wonderful lady. She has a Master of Fine Arts, and experience as a professor. So you know she’s got the knowledge to teach. But her demeanor is the biggie for me. She’s calm, friendly, and has a quirky sense of humor. (Plus she loves my dog.) This class is going to be a lot of fun. Hope to see you there!

Free child safety event on May 9 in Georgetown, TX

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Matt Bertling, owner and chief instructor at Bertling’s ATA martial arts studio on Williams Drive in Georgetown, TX, announced at our networking group today that he’s hosting a child safety event on May 9 at 11 a.m. at Forbes Middle School. This event, Kids ‘N Power, is free to the public. Kids will learn about stranger dangers and some simple self-defense techniques that could mean the difference between abduction and escape. This is vital information that every kid should have. In addition, representatives from the Georgetown Police and Fire Departments will be on hand to help educate the kids about what they should know to stay safe.

Every child will leave with a fingerprint kit, dental records, DNA swabs, hair follicle samples, Child ID cards including a photograph… and it’s all completely free! If you have kids, I hope you’ll plan on attending this very valuable day.

Serendipity Children’s Festival

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

My good friend Nick Ramos of Graphismo designed this delightful poster for the upcoming Serendipity Children’s Festival that will be put on by the Montessori School on April 18 from 11 am to 5 pm. The festival looks super-fun, and I encourage anyone with kids to attend. Admission is free! Lots of fun activities and entertainment for the kiddos.

I have to say, I really think Nick outdid himself with this poster. Isn’t this adorable? The festival organizers wanted a lot of information on the poster, so Nick sat down to think about how he could pack in all the information. He came up with the concept of making the poster look like a game board. The parent invitations are post card sized with little spinners on them, and the kids’ invitations are like little playing cards.
Anyone in need of graphic design should contact Nick at Graphismo. Graphismo is small on size but big on creativity. I love Nick’s brain!

Death by Chocolate on Georgetown square

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Georgetown just put out a newsletter with ten romantic things to do in Georgetown over Valentine’s Day weekend. They’re trying to encourage more tourists to come to town to enjoy everything Georgetown has to offer. I would love it if our downtown area became as much of an attraction as Fredricksburg’s, and I think we’re heading in that direction. The Downtown Georgetown Association is certainly doing everything they can to make the square fun and lively. They’re having a fabulous event, tied in with the launch of First Fridays. This coming Friday evening, from 6 - 8 p.m., the public is invited to come to the square for Death by Chocolate. Local restaurants are providing delicious chocolate desserts in some of the stores on the square, and there’s going to be a drawing for a Death by Chocolate gift basket. Musicians will play live music, and you can bet there will be wine, too. Stop by Moreland’s if you’re out and about. I have it on good authority that the agents at Moreland’s will have some delicious desserts on hand, as well–for free!

Mardi Gras with a canine twist

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

On February 21, the Georgetown animal shelter is hosting a dog walk and canine costume contest at San Gabriel Park. You’ll see the poster below around town a lot over the next month. (Designed by the multi-talented Nick Ramos of Graphismo.)

Dog walk for animal shelter in Georgetown, Texas

The dog walk’s major sponsor is our local Schlotzky’s restaurant. I have to say, Michele J., the owner of this particular Schlotzky’s (whose last name will be too hard for me to spell until her upcoming marriage), has a philanthropic spirit. This past weekend, in fact, they donated 50 cents for every sandwich sold to the very talented Georgetown High School band. Support Schlotzky’s by eating there when you’re in the mood for a sandwich; they sure do a lot to support Georgetown. They also provide great catering services with fresh ingredients.

Online registration is available for the Mardi Gras dog walk. I’ve already signed up. Now I’m practicing with my dog to wear his colorful Mardi Gras costume so he’ll wear it all the way around the 3.1-mile walking path. He is going to have so much fun!

Car that stops itself will stop itself in Georgetown

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

I happened across an article from The Earth Times (which obviously came from a Volvo press release). Volvo has a new car coming out that will stop itself if the driver is about to get in an fender bender in slow city traffic. If the car is about to hit the car in front of it and the driver doesn’t react, it’ll hit its own brakes.
Why am I writing about this on HometownGeorgetown? Because before Volvo releases this magical car, they’re going to tour it through 85 cities in the U.S., and Georgetown is one of those cities! We’ve hit the big time, baby. We’re on the Volvo “From Sweden with Lov” tour. (I guess they spell “love” without the “e” in Swedish. I had to mention it so you wouldn’t think I made a mistake. I know… pathetic. I have a pathological need for everyone to think of me as an excellent speller.) Volvo coming to Georgetown, Texas
Supposedly, you can find tour dates on the website I linked to above, but I couldn’t find them anywhere. The car should be here sometime between now and March. If you can’t wait that long, you can see videos on thecarthatstopsitself.com.

Super fun kids’ activity on no-school days

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Mel’s Lonestar Lanes, Georgetown’s own fabulous family entertainment center, is offering something very creative next week at 10 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday… Bowling with Santa! Isn’t that cool? $5.00 per child includes an hour of bowling and shoe rental. Bring your camera so you can get a picture of your children bowling with St. Nick. Reservations are requested, and you can make them by calling 512-930-2200. Bowl with Santa at Mel's Lonestar Lanes
The bowling alley will be open on Christmas Day, too, from 3 p.m. until midnight (half-price until 7 p.m.) Santa won’t be there that day, as far as I kow. He’ll probably be recuperating from a long evening flying all over the world.
At CJ’s Sports Bar & Grill, in the Mel’s entertainment complex, there’s going to be a New Year’s Eve party. I spent a couple of hours at CJ’s last week, and it was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. It’s a casual, adult place to hang out. A pub, cozy (but not small). Each lane has soft, comfortable sofas in a booth-type setup. No smoking allowed, so you don’t have to fight your way through the air to get to your booth. There’s a full bar, too, as well as pool tables. This really would be a fun place to spend New Year’s Eve.
